Geriatric Resource Nurse/Case Manager Course - Continuing Education Program Offered by UTHealth School of Nursing
The Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) Model fosters professional development and enhances work satisfaction. The GRN Model provides nurses with the skills and support necessary to deliver Quality Geriatric Care. Geriatric specific resources (continuing education, equipment, and specialty services), interprofessional collaboration, and nurse involvement in patient centered treatment-related decision making are the foundation of the GRN training. The GRN role dimensions include: clinical, peer consultant, educator and quality change agent. GRNs respond to the specialized needs of older adult patients. Without the focused processes for quality geriatric care found on ACE units, hospitalized older adults experience higher rates of: functional decline, medication errors, readmission, and/or longer lengths of stay (Counsell et al., 2000).
The 2014 GRN Workshop starts May 21. There are 4 in-classroom sessions held at the UTHealth School of Nursing and a two month period to work on projects. The commitment is a time period of six months to complete the UT GRN course. After completing the course each GRN will infuse their work site with Geriatric Best Practices and serve as a Geriatric Champion.
Nursing Continuing Education: a total of 28.0 nursing contact hours will be awarded for completing all four workshop days. A total of 7.0 nursing contact hours will be awarded for attending one workshop day.
Audience: Nurses and Case Managers who are working in acute care hospitals, long term care, home health agencies, hospice organizations, or assisted living facilities providing care for older adults. Nurses and Case Managers interested in exploring a career in the field of geriatrics.

All classes are held at the UTHealth School of Nursing, 6901 Bertner Avenue, Houston, TX 77030 at the corner of Bertner Avenue and Holcombe Boulevard in the Texas Medical Center. Parking is available directly across Holcombe Blvd. or in the underground May’s Clinic (a part of MD Anderson Cancer Center). You may also take the Metro Rail to the Transit Center stop at Fannin Street and Pressler Street and walk one block east to the School of Nursing.
The Houston Geriatric Education Center (H-GEC) is funded by a grant from HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration) of the Department of Health and Human Services. The grant was initially funded in 2007 with renewed funding for five years beginning in 2010. The H-GEC has established a collaborative partnership in geriatric education and training with faculty in the UTHealth Schools (Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, and Biomedical Informatics) and in the neighboring Schools of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy at Texas Woman's University and the College of Pharmacy, Graduate College of Social Work, and Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Houston. The interdisciplinary faculty designs and develops curriculum and educates healthcare students, providers, and faculty and community service providers, such as adult protection staff, local police and sheriff departments, financial planners, elder law attorneys, and voluntary ombudsmen, on the care of vulnerable elders. Topics include:

- Memory issues
- Mental health and behavior management
- Caregiver issues

- Elder abuse and mistreatment
- Disaster preparedness
- Cultural competence
- Health literacy
The renewed H-GEC offers:
- A certificate program in geriatrics for interdisciplinary healthcare providers
- A faculty development course for faculty teaching in healthcare programs in community colleges
- Education and training in palliative and end of life care for teams of interdisciplinary healthcare providers in acute care settings
- Short courses and training for healthcare providers, students and faculty and community service providers
- An annual student competition in which interdisciplinary teams of students from nine different healthcare disciplines assess a group of frail elders in a community setting and present their observations and recommendations to a live audience.
The H-GEC disseminates the curricula it has developed since 2007 to other organizations, including other GECs within Texas, the American Medical Association for online continuing education of physicians, and the Department of Justice. The H-GEC is also committed to increasing the number of program learners from minority or underserved groups so that healthcare professionals are better able to serve our diverse population of elders.
Principal investigator of the grant is Carmel Dyer, MD.
Supplemental Funding Awarded to Houston Geriatric Education Center
In July 2012 the H-GEC was awarded supplemental funding by HRSA to address provide training for doctors, nurses, and other health care providers on recognizing the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and how to manage the disease. The funds were part of President Obama's fiscal year 2013 budget that provided a $100 million increase for efforts to combat Alzheimer's disease and included $80 million for research, $4.2 million to improve public awareness of the disease, $4 million to support provider education programs, $10.5 million to invest in caregiver support, and $1.3 million to improve data collection.
In its successful proposal, the H-GEC built upon current programs of providing geriatric education and training to interprofessional practitioners to offer additional and updated information about detection and management of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.
Geriatric Gems and Palliative Pearls were a product of The Training Excellence in Aging Studies (TEXAS) program that was funded from 2008 through 2013 by a grant to UTHealth from the D. W. Reynolds Foundation. The goal of the TEXAS program was to strengthen and promote geriatric education for medical students, faculty, and practicing physicians and, ultimately, to create an environment of excellence in geriatric care at UTHealth and throughout the community.
Medical School Programs in Geriatrics
Geriatric Medicine Fellowship - A one-year clinical fellowship for physicians in Internal Medicine or Family Practice who wish to become geriatricians
Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship - A one-year clinical fellowship for physicians in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, and from other specialties.
Residency Program – Internal Medicine and Family Practice residents rotate through the Geriatrics Consultation Services at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and LBJ Community Hospital. They may also choose a consult/subspecialty elective in geriatrics.
Medical Students – Third and fourth year medical students experience Geriatrics as part of their Internal Medicine clerkships. Medical students may do a scholarly concentration in geriatrics throughout their four years of their training or may choose to take a geriatrics Blue Book elective, an optional short course designed to enrich and enhance the medical student’s core curriculum experience. This short course occurs during the Spring semester.
